INTRODUCTION
About Hoops & Loops
In partnership with NBA Canada, KCJ is hosting 2 basketball-themed community coding events that align with Toronto Raptors exhibition games in Montreal and Vancouver. Through these events, we aim to demonstrate the vast possibilities of code and the increasing importance of using and promoting code in non-STEM fields, such as sports.
Each event will take place in the gym of a local, underserved school in each respective region. The coding portions of the events will consist of interactive coding stations with a basketball theme, introducing kids to unplugged activities - where they’ll learn the basics of code off the computer - animation, and hardware, such as the micro:bit.
Attendees of this event include NBA Legends players, the Raptors’ mascot and dancers, KCJ
MONTREAL EVENT
Venue
The event is taking place at Westmount High School (herein referred to as Westmount High). The school works with one of our community partners, the Trevor Williams Kids Foundation, on a program called the Chill Zone, which allows youth to understand and address their feelings to limit the amount of aggression and bullying that can happen in schools. The school also has a very strong basketball program and team, similar to Tupper. We are inviting Trevor Williams to attend.
Approximate number of kids: 150
Similar to the Vancouver event, there will be 2 sides on the gym but the same activities will be taking place on both. There will be 3 - 4 coding stations set up on each side, allowing each child the opportunity to spend a good 12 minutes at each station.
